Injury or trauma to the tooth.
Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. Having a root canal done on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise would die and have to be removed. Many patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is the solution, but what is not realized is that extracting (pulling) a tooth will ultimately be more costly and cause significant problems for adjacent teeth. Ignoring the infected tooth pain may eventually lead to bone loss in jaw, an extraction, spreading infection or cause an abscess. Severe tooth decay, dental disease or traumatic injury can cause the pulp to become infected. All teeth contain pulp that is made up of blood vessels and nerves. When the pulp become infected, you may experience severe pain, jaw, facial or neck swelling and bad breath ( Halitosis). You may notice that tooth has turned dark and that a sac filled with pus along your gum line.
