Teeth are porous and susceptible to discoloration. Excessive fluorination during tooth development ( fluorosis), Normal wear of outer tooth layer, Red wine, smoking cigarettes, coffee, tea, soft-drinks,curries and certain medications like tetracycline can stain your teeth may result in yellow, grayish teeth. Brushing alone can not brighten your discolored teeth. 

Teeth whitening is the process where teeth are bleached to lighten the shade. It only works on natural tooth enamel, therefore it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc so they will match the newly bleached teeth. There are many benefit of teeth whitening, including healthy and more attractive smile. It is relatively safe procedure, although some patient’s may get mid gum irritation and teeth may become more sensitive for few days after procedure. Teeth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up may be needed every several years, and more often if you continue to smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

 

RISKS

Teeth whitening is not suitable for people who are undergoing PUVA therapy and Other photo-chemotherapy, Certain dermatological conditions like photosensitivity to lights, while pregnant, being on light - sensitive drugs, Patients with strong gag reflex or anxiety. Whitening doesn’t work on ceramic or porcelain crowns or veneers, whitening may make your teeth sensitive if you have tooth decay or gum disease. Please notify dentist about your medical history.
